Lake Como

The Lario, or Lake Como is one of the three Italian great lakes. Located north of the boot, in Lombardy, about fifty kilometers from Milan, it’s in the form of the letter “Y”. At first glance, the variety of its landscapes is striking. Bordered by mountains which are snow capped in winter and an abundance of flora as soon as the temperatures rise in the spring, Lake Como is a multi-faceted site. There are several small towns along its banks which run from Switzerland to the province of Milan, and each one adds its own character to the area.

The city of Como in the north, is undoubtedly the most interesting historically. The monuments are all fascinating. The San Abbandinoand the San Fedele basilicas bear witness to the majestic work created by the Comacini masters. The remains of the city’s ramparts were built by Barberousse. In addition, there are sumptuous palaces and villas, the likes of which can only be found in Italy. Visitors can also visit the traditional silk factories in the region, which, for several centuries, have contributed to the city’s reputation.

Dolce Villa Serbelloni

The Villa Serbelloni is one of the largest and most luxurious hotels in the world. Located in Bellagio, a few kilometers from Como, within the walls of a former vacation villa, built for an aristocratic, mid 19^th century Milanese family, it’s one of the region’s oldest hotels.

Proudly possessing its five star status, the Villa Serbelloni is a pure jewel, and the panoramic view it offers is truly incredible. Ideally situated at the tip of the Bellagio promontory, the hotel faces both the turquoise waters of the lake and the mountains around it. The park, rich in colorful plants and flowers is still another magnificent sight.

The 95 rooms are all decorated in classical style, combining precious furniture, refined woodwork and French type tapestries. The suites have princely type bedrooms with finely gilded chandeliers and marble columns.

Chef Ettore Bocchia proposes a cuisine more than worthy of the hotel and its guests in both of the Villa’s restaurants. The Terrazza Serbelloni opens onto a very romantic terrace and the Mistral, awarded a star in 2005, in addition to offering a wide choice of traditional dishes, will surprise guests with a menu consisting exclusively of molecular cuisine.

Lake Como has always made the cinema world dream. Luchino Visconti’s, “Rocco and His Brothers” was filmed here in 1960, and just a few kilometers from Como, American film star, George Clooney has his own villa.
