The name Thebes invokes ancient Egypt…eternal Egypt, the Egypt of the pharaohs and great dynasties that created a civilization whose grandeur still fascinates visitors the world over. The ancient city of Thebes, today’s Luxor, abounds with vestiges of its glorious past including the temples of Luxor and Karnak and of course, the Valley of the Kings. These eternal monuments attract approximately four million visitors a year. And yet, this huge number of visitors does not necessarily have to mean gigantic impersonal hotels. Four kilometers from the Valley of the Kings, in the Egyptian countryside, lies a site that invokes both the oriental tradition of hospitality and the demands of a contemporary clientele in search of a sense awakening experience. Al Moudira is a refined luxurious and unique hotel in that its palace-like qualities are closely linked to the charms of a simple residence. Grandiose and family oriented at the same time, Al Moudira is above all the precise reflection of its creator and director, Zeina Aboukheir.
Al Moudira means “the boss” in the feminine gender, and is the name the workers, who spent three years on the site, gave to Zeina Aboukheir, an appropriate nickname for this Lebanese photographer and jewelry designer whose influence can be felt in every square meter of her prestigious hotel. One enters through a majestic carved door, which takes visitors into a world of hand painted wall frescoes, cupolas, overhangs, arabesques and moucharabiehs with such well thought out, finely executed details, that the eye gets lost in their overabundance. Located in an eight-hectare oasis of greenery, the hotel is impregnated with the aromas of lemon, jasmine, mango and orange blossom. Here everything is color, enchantment and surprise, like the floating flower basin, which contains three baby crocodiles! The dreamlike atmosphere of the place is not due merely to chance. Zeina Aboukheir designed the site together with Olivier Sedaoui, inspired by childhood dreams. We can therefore find Lebanese, Turkish, Syrian and even Italian influences. The entire structure however, is extremely homogeneous. The palace of one’s dreams was rethought and corrected by an incredible imagination, thanks to which the Al Moudira retains the charm of a private residence. Zeina Aboukheir decorated each room differently with furnishings from her private collection. Everything has been done to make the visitor feel at home in this idealized and ideal oriental palace which unites three indispensable elements: space, luxury and hospitality.
The Al Moudira Hotel is a very popular destination for celebrities from all over the world including footwear designer Christian Louboutin, Kate Moss and Mick Jagger.
