Monasterio Hotel

5 stars, Authentic, Classic, Colonial, Confidential, Historic, Unusual, Mythical, Luxury, City, Cultural activities, Art collection, Gardens, Restaurant

The Belmond Hotel Monasterio, formerly a monastery as its name indicates, has retained the serenity and contemplative atmosphere once enjoyed by the monks who lived there. This national monument is now a hotel offering guests the standards of elegance and comfort expected of a five star establishment. The building’s Incan roots are still visible, adding to the Monasterio’s majestic aspect. Beginning with its magnificent interior courtyard, the hotel provides old world charm and contemporary services in the heart of Cuzco. It is also a site in which culture plays a vital role since the hotel’s own art collection is on display, visually informing visitors of the history of the Incan Empire.

Cuzco

Peru, the third largest country in South America has always been an exceptional tourist destination. The Spanish conquistadores came here in search of El Dorado and instead found the Incan Empire, a civilization which fascinates people to this day thanks to the remains of Machu Picchu and the Empire’s ancient capital city of Cuzco.

Cuzco is located at an altitude of 3,400 meters and was the « navel » of the Incan Empire, the literal translation of Cuzco in the Quechuan language. Incan history is present in the ruins and the architecture since the colonial Spanish style was influenced by the Incas. Incan stones provide the foundation for the superb villas and carved balconies found in the center of Cuzco, an ideal, charming and highly popular spot for strolling.

A sanctuary with timeless luxury

Le Belmond Hotel Monasterio, as its name indicates, is situated within the walls of a monastery dating back to 1592. The building is a protected site as it is one of Cuzco’s historic monuments. Located just a few steps from the city center in a serene setting, the Monasterio is a haven of peace and contemplation.

The central courtyard with its hundred year old cedar tree in its natural setting is the heart of this charming and timeless building. Tiles and cobblestones provide the superb pathways with flowers adding color and contrast to the tinted stones and arches representing a still vibrant and living history.

The interior decor preserves this very special atmosphere with the addition of discreet modern comforts, as if to create doubts in the minds of the guests as to whether they are in the 16th or the 21st century. The monastery’s own art collection adds to this pleasant dilemma. Thus, culture becomes an organic part of this luxury establishment which enchants the senses and enriches the spirit.

The 125 rooms and suites offer a combination of Spanish colonial style and a touch of the modern. The oxygen enriched accommodations offer the ideal setting for relaxation. This feature avoids any discomfort resulting from the altitude as the city is over 3,000 meters high.

Its geographic situation explains the fact that the hotel does not offer a gym since the slightest effort is felt twice as much. It is however, possible to enjoy a massage or an aromatherapy session, and more courageous guests can hire a mountain bike to discover Cuzco, the heart of the Incan Empire.

The monastery, built by the Spanish, is on the former site of the Amaru Qhala Incan palace. In 1650, an earthquake damaged the monastery which was later restored with the addition of a chapel. In 1965, the building was transformed into a hotel.
