Malé

The Maldives archipelago consists of 26 atolls with more than 1,190 small islands in the heart of the Indian Ocean. Some of these islands are still uninhabited, and the flora and fauna present, reign supreme. The islands are often either small sandbars lost in the midst of the crystalline water or islands covered with flowers and tropical trees. Although tourism is highly developed in this region of the world, largely because of the pleasant climate and the beauty of its sites, fishing remains one of the principle activities of the local inhabitants. The city of Malé, capital of the Maldives, is a central point for fishing through its celebrated fish market where all of the city’s residents get together. To learn about local life however, the port is the place to go. It’s here that the majority of fruits and vegetables and bought and sold as well as other products necessary to the island’s inhabitants. At the port, in the middle of the afternoon, visitors can watch the numerous dhonis, the small wooden fishing boats typical of the archipelago, with their white triangular sail, as the crews return from a day of fishing and unload their catch. It’s no wonder that the country’s traditional dish is fish and rice!

Meals are served in the villas or in the three highly varied restaurants.
