The Residence d’Angkor in the center of Siem Reap, rises above the river and faces the magical site of the Angkor temples. This luxury boutique hotel, entirely built with wood, offers its guests every possible modern comfort enhanced with refined details assuring guests of a warm, hospitable and discreet ambiance. Architects Alan Alédeo and Jean-François Chevance created this minimalist, elegant and sober five star hotel built with total respect for environmental norms. The spacious suites which pay tribute to Khmer art, offer guests impeccable service. La Residence d’Angkor is a worthy representative of the Orient-Express chain. The salons of the Kong Kea Spa provide a source of life and regeneration for guests in need of relaxation.

The archaeological site of Angkor

Angkor, the ancient capital of the Khmer monarchy, is one of the most exceptional archaeological sites in the world. For about five centuries, temples were built to the glory of Hindu and Buddhist gods. In 1860, French naturalist, Henri Mouhot wrote down his impressions: “One looks, one admires, and, filled with respect, one remains silent. How do you find the words to praise what has no equivalent in the world, that was built with the genius of this eastern Michelangelo who created this unparalleled work.”

The salutary water is there for everyone

On the banks of the Siem Reap River, at the entrance to the archaeological site of Angkor, an elegant structure appears in the heart of lush vegetation, its architecture inspired by that of the Khmer. Opened in 2002, the ultra luxurious Angkor Residence, formerly Pansea-Angkor in 2006, became part of the prestigious group of Orient Express Hotels. Decorated with wood, the Residence is a direct reference to the subtlety and delicateness of Khmer art. The architects, Alain Amédéo and Jean-François Chevance opted to use natural materials like bamboo, precious wood and stone to create a feeling of harmony between the property and its natural environment. The element of water, the source of life and regeneration is omnipresent, from the treatments carried out at the Kong Kea Spa celebrating the benefits and curing powers of water, to the salt water pool inspired by the Barray lakes adjacent to the temples of Angkor. Kong Kea, literally, “divine waters” is a faithful translation of the site’s dedication to the true definition of the word spa, “cure by water.”

The hotel’s policy is to support local craftsmen. The suites therefore are places to exhibit the works of artists one of whom is Mao Soviet, a young Cambodian and a rising star on the contemporary art horizon. The interiors provide modern comfort and refined details. Silk cushions and cotton drapes breathe an atmosphere of intimacy and relaxation. Among the hotel’s numerous services, is a one-day excursion to the Angkor temples’ site, organized in partnership with the About Asia company.

Today marks a decisive step in the development of tourism and hotels in the region of Angkor. Siem Reap, the heart of the ancient Khmer civilization, welcomes a new five star establishment, built with respect for environmental norms and decorated in traditional Khmer style. This building does not only represent an investment but also a feeling of pride for the royal government and the people of Cambodia. More importantly, it’s a demonstration of confidence in the political and economic stability of the country. (Speech inaugurating the Hotel Pansea Angkor, February 27th, 2002.
